| Introduction |
|
Jot is a fast and easy to use handwriting recognition system for the Palm operating system. It is designed for maximum speed and accuracy while using a minimal amount of memory. Jot's natural character sets allows fast and accurate input on the Palm organizer.
Is there a trial version of Jot?
Yes. A 5-day trial is available from www.shopcic.com.
You can order and download Jot from www.shopcic.com.
- Natural character set
- Write anywhere on the Palm organizer screen
- See ink as you write on your Palm organizer
- On-line Animated Tutorial
- Supports Roman based Western European characters and accent marks
- Tuner select the way you write some characters
Whats the difference between Jot and Graffiti?
Jot's natural character sets provide several ways of writing most characters. Therefore it encompasses most peoples' printing styles. Uppercase letters, shortcuts and punctuation are also very simple with Jot's user interface. Jot characters can be written in the Graffiti writing area and directly on the screen. You can view the letters as you write them.
Graffiti 2 is Jot with the following minor differences: Jot allows you to write one-stroke "i", "k" and "t".
You can write as fast as you are able to without waiting for the system to recognize each character before writing the next letter. Jot will recognize each character and send the letters to the active application.
What applications do Jot support?
Jot works with most standard Palm OS applications. Jot can be used wherever text entry is needed.
What improvements are available in version 2.1?
- Support for Palm Tungsten T3
- Support for Handspring Treo 600

Identifying the mode mark on the top edge of the Palm organizer screen
If you've selected to write on the screen and display the mode mark in your Jot preferences, a triangle marker appears at the top edge of your Palm organizer. This mark divides the screen into three areas: Writing anywhere on the screen or input area below this marker gives you uppercase letters; writing to the left, lowercase letters; and to the right, numbers.
Note: This mode mark is suppressed and not displayed on the Handspring Treo Blazer application.
Write uppercase letters below the triangle marker. Write lowercase letters to the left of the triangle marker. Write numbers to the right of the triangle marker. Writing uppercase/capital letters
Write capital letters directly below the triangle marker. You do not need a "Caps Shift" or "Caps Lock" stroke.
You can customize the way you write the characters I, T, K, P, Y, and $. Tap on the letter you wish to tune. Check the box if you wish to use the method described for writing the character. An unchecked box indicates that you will use other valid forms of writing the character. When appropriate, specific directions are noted for writing characters with similar strokes.
Letter Form Comments i The standard use of the downstroke is for writing the letter 'L.' If you select to use this for the letter 'i', write 'L' as shown in the Tuner. t (1) The standard use of this stroke is for writing an apostrophe [ ' ]. If you select to use this for the letter 'T' or 't', you will need to write the apostrophe in Extended mode. t (2) To use this form of 'T' or 't', you must cross the strokes. These strokes are similar to writing the letter 'el' [ l ] followed by a 'space'. Keep these strokes separated so they are not interpreted as a 'T' or 't'. t (3) To use this form of 't', you must cross the strokes. These strokes are similar to writing a 'space' followed by the letter 'el' [ l ]. Keep these strokes separated so they are not interpreted as a 't'. k Check box to write a two-stroke 'K' or 'k'. These strokes are similar to writing the letter 'el' [ l ] followed by the letter 'c'. Keep these strokes separated so they are not interpreted as a 'k'. p Check box to write a two-stroke 'P' or 'p'. y Check box to write a two-stroke 'Y' or 'y'. $ Check box to write the dollar sign [ $ ] in the number area. These strokes are similar to writing the numbers five [ 5 ] and one [ 1 ]. Keep these strokes separated so they are not interpreted as a '$'.
- Write an upstroke to place Jot in extended mode.
- Write the character.
Jot will time out and display the character. If you do not wish to wait for Jot to time out, write a second upstroke to exit extended mode.
With Jot enabled,
- A single tap on the screen places the cursor at the location of the tap.
- A stroke begins writing of a character.
- A tap and hold selects an item.
- A tap, hold and drag selects text.
| Character Sets |
|
Character Set for Letters, Numbers and Accents
No. Jot recognizes many single stroke and some multiple stroke characters.
Does Jot require a special character set?
The Natural character set is a combination of upper- and lowercase letters in addition to numbers, symbols gestures, macros, and special characters. This character set was particularly selected to include all of the most common printed character shapes, based on extensive data from CIC's large database of hand printed characters.
Will Jot auto-complete words as I write them similar to the Microsoft Windows CE-based Pocket PCs?
No, the autocompletion is a feature of the Microsoft OS, not Jot. However, you can auto-complete words using CIC's WordComplete.
No. You can write some letters as cursive character shapes; but you cannot connect the letters. Jot is a print based character recognizer, meaning each character is recognized immediately.
Does Jot allow me to write numbers, accents, and symbols?
Yes. This is one of Jot's user interface benefits - you can easily write numbers, punctuation, symbols, accents, and special characters.
How do I write a "L" and a space? I keep getting a "T".
You can get a "L" and a space if you write in one of the following methods:
- Write the downstroke for the "L" and write the "-" for a space a little to the right of the "L". As long as you do not write the "L" and space in the same spot, you should not get a "T".
- Write the downstroke for the "L" and the "-" underneath the "L".
- Select to not use the downstroke and cross-stroke to write the "T" in the Tuner.
Yes, they are called shortcuts on Palm OS.
A shortcut is a quick method used to write a long phrase or perform an action. For example, a shortcut can be defined to write out "Communication Intelligence Corporation" when we write "CIC" after the shortcut gesture.
Do the Jot Shortcuts work like Graffiti shortcuts?
Yes.
| Using Graffiti |
|
If you select to use Graffiti instead of the Jot recognizer, you should note the following:
- You can write directly on the Palm organizer screen as well as in the input panel.
- You can see ink as you write.
- You can display the mode mark to guide you with writing letters and numbers.
- Refer to your Palm organizer user manual for Graffiti character shapes, and information on how to enter data with Graffiti.
The mode mark divides your Palm organizer screen into two writing areas. Write letters to the left of the mode mark and numbers to the right.
Note: This mode mark is suppressed and not displayed on the Handspring Treo Blazer application.
Invoking the punctuation mode when writing on the screen
Since you can write anywhere on the screen, a tap on the screen places the cursor. To shift into Punctuation mode write a "\" from lower right to upper left, then write the character.
- A single tap on the screen places the cursor at the location of the tap.
- A stroke begins writing of a character.
- A tap and hold selects an item.
- A tap, hold and drag selects text.
To view the Graffiti strokes, tap on Graffiti Help from the Jot Preference screen. Scroll through the pages for assistance in writing characters, punctuation, and symbols.
